Today I travelled on the Taieri Gorge train that runs most days from Dunedin Railway Station. According to the speaker who told us all about the train, the railway station is the most photographed building in the southern hemisphere. I’m not sure that’s true, but it’s a very impressive building.
There were also lots of fossils and information about New Zealand flora and fauna.
The train goes to Pukerangi and the route takes you through the goldfields areas. At the start, the countryside is obviously a well to do agricultural area.
However, once it passes through a couple of ranges,
the land becomes very broken, with schist everywhere. This is also the driest part of New Zealand.
After I returned, I visited the Tuhura Otago Museum, which had a lot of very interesting displays, including a magnificent Maōri canoe,
and some Polynesian weaving.
