Abel Tasman Walk - Day 1

Today I joined a group walking or walking and kayaking the Abel Tasman trail, in the Abel Tasman National Park. We were picked up from our accommodation in Nelson, and taken by bus

to the boat which transported us up the coast to the northernmost point of our walk. On the way, we saw how the forest comes straight down to the sea

although there were some sandy estuaries,

including the one at the start of our walk.

The coast is very rough, with rocks in a lot of places,

Including some very big ones

like Split Apple Rock.

We then walked south to our first lodge. At first we walked through a large campground, where there were many Wekas

and chicks.

Then we walked through forest catching glimpses of the sea,

seeing lots of moss,

treeferns,

and a few beaches.

We eventually came to the edge of the estuary, which was flooded,

so we caught a barge across before walking along the beach to our lodge.
