Down the Coast

There is a trail along the coast to the buildings of the Hudson Bay Company in Apex (originally a town of Inuit people attracted to the military settlement that was the start of Iqaluit). We walked along the trail, from the original graveyard.

Along the coast

Until we reached the Hudson Bay Company buildings. The one with two doors is the first building, which is from the original Hudson Bay post.

They are very protective of their sand.

Then we walked back the same way. While we were walking we found patches of wild blueberries

And crowberries.

There were a number of beached icebergs.

The tides here are quite large. When we got back to the cemetery, the mud flats were covered.

After we had finished the Apex Trail, we walked around town. First stop was the museum. They had displays of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing.

And fossils.

The visitors centre next door had a great tapestry and sculpture.

The primary school resembles a marshmallow.

This is the Anglican Cathedral. This was the place where the first Anglican service was performed in North America, by the priest on Frobisher’s ship.

Other buildings are quite outstanding. The portraits on the green building are of prominent people in the history of Iqaluit.
