Yellowknife

This morning we followed the path partway around Frame Lake. This starts very close to the hotel, and wanders through several parks that are on the lake, before it reaches the Legislative Assembly. We needed to be back to meet the tour leader so we went about a third of the way round. In the second park, there was a memorial to miners, in the form of a poppet head and a seat made from mining drills.

Further on, there was wilderness, with views across parts of the town.

We saw ground squirrels and ducks before we needed to turn around.

We were taken around the town, but I didn’t have my camera with me. We had dinner at a really nice fish restaurant. After dinner I decided to visit the Prince of Wales Heritage Museum. It had many interesting displays, including one on baskets from spruce roots and birch bark...

Some embroidered caribou items...

And a moosehide canoe. These were only used once - to carry a heavy load from mountains down a strongly running stream after a hunting and gathering expedition.

The view from my room is gorgeous. You can see Lake Niven with Great Slave Lake in the background. It’s one of the biggest lakes in the world.

In the morning we will be taken to some remote places and will be without wifi for a few days, so I won’t be updating the blog until we’re back here.
