Skaftafell

Dyrholaey is famous for all its birds, and the views up and down the coast. There weren't any birds, but the views were fantastic!

Then the ring road goes through the enormous Eldhraun lava field, where moss covered rocks predominate. I took a detour to a place that hadn't been affected, but had cone shaped hills between the sheep.

Next I visited Kirkjubaeajarklaustur, where the Laki eruption (in the1700s, when Iceland lost one fifth of its population) had been seen. The lava was about to inundate the town, when the priest gave a sermon credited with stopping that particular lava flow (there were several). There was originally a convent here, and the twin Waterfall is named after the sisters. There is also a tessilated pavement, credited to the Irish monks who are thought to have been here before the Vikings.

Then I came to Skaftafell National Park, where Europe's largest icecap, Iceland's highest mountain and ten volcanoes reside. Svartafoss with its basalt columns was one of the waterfalls I really wanted to visit.
